Mackenzie for thirteen hundred dollars which is entered on record on the books of this Office — I am &c W.S. M^r Jon^s Waldo November 25^th 1800 Salem, Massachussetts — Sir I have received your letter dated 8 Ins^t and in reply thereto have to inform you that on application to the War Office for a copy of the Instructions furnished therefrom relatives to the Fortifications at Fort Pickering, none can be had as all the papers belonging to that Office were destroyed by fire— To enable me therefore to direct you what forms are necessary in rendering your accounts, it is necessary that you should furnish me with the Instructions under which you acted. As to the compensation I can make no decision as none has been fixed it will remain with the Sec^y of War to decide what sum shall be allowed. The Hon^ble Accountants Office The Secretary of War November 29^th 1800 Sir In the accounts of Ebnezer Stevens Agent for his Department at New York, there is a charge for the pay subsistence & forage of B. Genet, acting Surgeon at the Garrison of Fort Jay, from 29 Nov^r 1799 to 1 July 1800. It appears that he was appointed by Major Gen^l Hamilton to take charge of that Garrison on the 29 Nov^r 1799. and has ever since been mustered as such at the pay & emoluments of a Surgeon's Mate. He has now forwarded a claim for his compensation from 1 July to the present time— the Secretary of War will be pleased to decide whether the appointment made by Gen^l Hamilton is approved of by him & whether the pay & emoluments are to be continued to D^r Genet for the period above stated & if he is still to be continued in service — I am &c W.S.
