R.P.O. 401310.] Pittsburgh, 14^th Novem^r 1800 D^r Sir Your letter of the 21 Ultimo & 4^th & 6^th instant have all come safe to hand, the former on the 7^th the day on which the Embarkation of Troops from Camp Alleghany under the Command of Col^t Strong took place, that movement So indispensably Engaged my attention that I had not [undecipherable] [undecipherable] the receipt of letter — I am Sorry indeed Your application to the Secretary of War on my old Claim has been ineffectual, I have given you a great deal of trouble on this Business but pray what Steps [am I] next to take, I feel greatly mortified I assure you my dear Friend [that] little attention is paid to the applications of old Servants — I Shall give [undecipherable] the information respecting his Box — I however Don't recollect any Box or other Packages addressed to Col^t Butler arriving at this place during all the Summer — it is not probable that the Box in Question may have taken the Route to Knox-Ville — The Detachment under the Command of Col^t Strong had dropped down to Montour's Island when an Express arrived from the Gen^l directing A Halt till further Orders, the Troops are therefore Encamped on the Island where they will continue until the next Express arrived — Great Complaints for want of Winter Clothing — Pray is it not yet on the way.
