Sir I have received your letter of the 3d Inst.
accompanied by your accounts for expenditures on account
of the Fortifications in September last; which will be placed
under examination so soon as the hurry occasioned by the
unfortunate event of Saturday last, (which you will
no doubt hear of before this reaches you) shall in
some measure have subsided — Very fortunately the
papers of my office, have been, very generally saved —
those of the Secretary of War however have as generally
been destroyed —
