War Department 10th Novr. 1800
Sir
On Saturday evening last my Office with all the Records, Papers &c. was consumed by fire.
I have to request that you will as soon as possible procure a large Seal for the Department with Suitable Emblems & a small one Correspondent; also a Copperplate Engraving for Military Commissions.
Mr Hodgdon has very frequently seen those that are now destroyed and will be able to recollect so as to have the new ones made some-what similar. An exact resemblance cannot be obtained nor is it expected.
