Baltimore 2 Oct^r 1800 Dear Sir. I have considered the request made to me by M^r Dana, in your letter of the 26th Ulto. and am fully determined to comply with it. I inclose you therefore the Dialogue and the documents connected therewith, numbered as below, which you will be pleased to put into the hands of my discreet and estimable friend M^r Chauncey Goodrich, and to enjoin him, not to take or permit any copy or extract from the Dialogue or the Documents to be taken or made public on any account what-ever. I request also, if communicated to any person, that it be confidentially only. Should M^r Goodrich wish to leave them with a friend in Connecticut for a time, during his attendance in Congress, he must be responsible for his friends observing strictly these conditions and their being safely returned to me.
