[War Department] [The Accountant of the War Dep^t] War Department, 2^d Oct. 1800. Sir To yours of the 30^th ult^o respecting Capt Guion's account I answer that at the time the Services were rendered no office of Deputy Paymaster, and consequently no such compensation as thirty Dollars p^r month to such an Officer existed: since that time a Law has provided such an Officer on the western frontier with that compensation. Captⁿ Guion, who was sent there with general powers on an important and confidential mission had at least as much labor and responsibility resting on him as a Deputy Paymaster there can have had since, and his duties were not analogous to a Regimental Paymaster, he was of higher rank. I think therefore the above mentioned Law affords a good rule by which to measure the Rate of his Compensation, especially as I am informed by the Pay master General that the Business was performed by him with great assiduity & accuracy.
