Sir I have received your letter of the 5 Ins[t.] and on enquiry at the War Office I find your resignation was accepted the 21 January 1800. I know of no instance of an officer receiving pay after he had resigned & his resignati[on] accepted, therefore cannot undertake to direct any extension of your pay after that period — I am &c W.S. Cap.^t James Reed Accountants Office Millerstown Penns.^a Sep.^t 19.^th 1800 Sir I have received your letter of the 14 Sep.^t inst. with an account and sundry papers enclosed which I now inclose to you with the following observations — It appears that on the 21 April 1800, you attended the settlement of your acc[ount] at Philad.^a for Contingencies amounting to D^rs 350 7/100, the same was not fully supported by vouchers but was admitted on your making depositions that the same was justly due to you from the U. S., it was supposed at that time that the account exhibited and attested to by you embrace[d] all the just demand you had against the U. States for Contingencies, the account now exhibited is said to be for expenditures previous to that settlement & the vouchers produced are in many respects insufficient I am therefore of opini[on] that the whole of the charges now made are inadmissible I am &c
