Power of attorney of William Dugan, captured by Indians
Document 1800Sparks encloses power of attorney of William Dugan, late a private in Captain Guthries' Company of Levies, who was taking by the Indians in November 1791, with an oath respecting the time of his captivity. Requests what may be owing to Mr Dugan. Asks about contacting Secretary of War regarding extra duty remarking the boundary line between the United States and the Cherokee Nation on the border of Cumberland and Kentucky, which took 43 days.

Knoxville Sept 16 1800SirI now beg leave to inclose you a Power of atty I received from Wm Dugan late a private of Capt Guthries Company of Levies’- who was taken by the Indians on the 4 Nov 1791) withhis Oath respecting the time of his Captivityas also a Certification of Calib Swan esqrundecipherable] annexed to Said Power - and I alsoinclose you a Certificate of L Vance certify=ing that the Said Wm Dugan was byhim Inlisted on the 5 of May 1791 and servedin Capt Guthares Company until the 4Nov 1791 at which time he was captivatedby the Indians with a Certificate there on from Genr. Sinclair that he was the IdenticalWm Dugan who Served and was captivated_ as also a Certficate from W Kian one of theadvocate judges of the State of PennsylvaniaCertifying on or about the time that Duganarrived at Harrisburg from Captivity_
A Copy of those papers I will thankyou to forward to the Proper Office at theSeat of Government that I may obtainwhat may be owing to Dugan with yourobservations thereon and a request that theMoney may be paid me here_ Permit me Sir to requestthat you will write the Sec.y. of Warrelative to my extra duty as an officer inremarking the Boundary line between theUnited States and the Cherokee Indians beingthat part which lay on the borders ofCumberland and Kentucky on whichService I was absence 43 days_ andon which business you were good enoughto write to Coln McHenry while Sec of warand to which you recived no [undecipherable] answer
