Account of Colonel Mentges
Document 1800Col. Mentges informed Dexter that he appointed Lt. Carmichael and paid sixteen dollars per month for his services. This allowance is proper and reasonable so it should be admitted to Mentges' credit in the settlement of his account.

Mentges be admitted tothe C.r of the latter. [Editor’s note: The remainder is inverted 180°.] The Accountant of the War Department. War Department, 5th Sept.r 1800. Sir, Col. Mentges was authorised by my Predecessor to appoint a fit person to give receipts, for the materials delivered at Fort Mifflin, to superintend the workmen and to take charge of the articles, for which Services the person so appointed was to receive a proper & reasonable allowance. Col. Mentges informs me that he accordingly appointed Lieut.t Carmichael & paid him Sixteen Dollars per month for his Services: this allowance I consider proper & reasonable and request you to admit it to the Credit of Col.l Mentges in your Settlement of his accounts.
