Craig discusses military stores and shipment with Hodgdon
Document 1800Major Craig discusses the supply of gunpowder with Samuel Hodgdon. Craig also mentions the plight of the local farmers: good harvest but bad market.
424 Pittsburg 15th August 1800 Sir I have received your letter of the 8th inst enclosed with one addressed to General Gibson together with a Waggoners recent for a box also addressed to home & which shall be taken care of on its arrival, but it will be inconvenient to pay the transportation at this place agreeable to arrangements made by the Q. Master - and Gen Gibson left this place on the 1 June destined for Vincennes on the Wabash - The Q. M. Gen sets off to morrow for Washington City to meet the Commander in chief Secretary of War perhaps to see Mr Simmons - I am sorry that Col. Ohara has not arrived & sent off his Diamonds which are much wanted With respect to the quality of powder on hand I presume you must have had your eye to my return of January 1799, since which time the quality is reduced to 741 [scribble] on the first of July, which will appear on my return of Ordnance Stores transmitted to the Secretary of War, & which I expected would have been sent from the War office to you Mr Tracey is preparing to set out on Monday next for Presq isle & Detroit - I shall be glad to see the brother in law of the Governor of Missisippi territory and shall certainly endeavour to render his stay here as agreeable as possible ~ No news at present in this quarter is cert that the Farmer’s blessed with crops uncommonly plentiful & are complaining for want of a Market ~ I am Sir your obed Serv.
