Dear Sir I have receieved your letter (duplicate) dated the 25 April last, advising me that you have sent an atlas collect-ed by Faden, which contains almost all the best maps and latest published in England and upon the continent, but that not having ricuved Fadens account, you cannot tell the cost. The Atlas has come to hand in good order, deficient however in one map (the Islands of malta and Goza) mark-ed in the contents of 1^st Vol N° 34 - I beg you Sir to accept my sincere acknowledg ments for the troble you have taken in causing the collection to be made; When inform-ed of the cost, which can be done when the N° shor map deficient is transmitted, I shall immediately provide for remitting the amount or paying it to any person you may authorise to recieve it in this cuntry, having always intended the collecteon for my private use, of course on my private account. I have acknowledged in an official letter written towards the close of my duties as secretary of war the receipt of a model of a Field piece, together with a memoir from Count Rumford, and at the same time addressed to the Count himself my considerations and thanks. I also have written to you respecting the incombustible cartridge paper, one shipment of which, owing to some error in the addrefs, as was represented to me, was lost to the public, having arrived at New York, been lodged in the custom house, remained there the legal time, and there sold as common coarse paper. - the particulars being on the files of the war office, I have not now access to, but take the liberty of referring you to my letter on the subject, which I hope has ere this been received. The minds of our citizens, particularly of our politicians, are now directed towards the Presidential Election - how it will eventuate, & is perhaps uncertain a pretty general disposition seems to be expressed by those of a certain cast to run M^r Adams and General Cotesworth Pinckney equally and as strongly as possi-ble- The other side adhere as heretofore to M^r Jefferson. Many of your former friends, are much induced to wish ultimate success may be the lot of General Pinckney, and for this wish they conceive reasons to exist of the greatest magnitude.
