Account of Capt. Eliot
Document 1800Although Dexter believes that Capt. Eliot is entitled to have his account settled for past services in compliance with his contract with the late Secretary of War, he is not entitled to extra compensation for proving cannon or superintending the works at Philadelphia.
War Department 30 July 1800 Sam.l Dexter decision on the claim of Capt [Jan?] :Elliott [Editor’s Note: The remainder is rotated 180° from the above.] War Dep.t William Simmons Esqre[Acctlod.?] War Department 30.th July 1800 Sir I am of opinion that Capt.n Eliot is entitled to have his Account settled for past Services according to the Contract he made with the late Secretary of War & that it will not be proper for you or me to enquire whether that Contract was a proper one with respect to the time in which Capt.n Eliot has been acting under it. With respect to his Account for proving Cannon I do not think he can be entitled to the extra Compensation contended.
