Pittsburg July 25^th 1800 Sir, Enclosed herewith you will find a General return of Ordnance Mens and Cloathing — commencing the first of April, Pending the first of July 1800 at this post A part of the Cloathing so repeated damaged, have been long in hand, being either of the old Uniform, now out of use; Cloathing sent here for the use of the Militia army, employed to suppress the Insurgents in the year 1794; a cloathing destined for the garrisons of [undecipherable: Fort Michilimackinac] &c fin- jured on its way on the Allegheny; previous to their post — Notwithstanding the utmost care has been taken, it has been found impossible to prevent the Woolen from injury by Moths a part of which consists of Defects Blankets, which not being of the quality suited to the troops of the United States have still continued on hand — I have however expected that they might have been applied as part of the annual Stipend, to the Chickasaw Indians being of the quality usually furnished that nation. This measure I had taken the Liberty of suggesting to the honble James McHenry your predecessor in Office, who in answer to my letter intimated that he approved of my Suggestion & that the Blankets should be disposed of accordingly. You will please to observe Sir, that the quantity of powder on hand is very small and by the annual Issues to the troops at Fort Fayette & in the vicinity of this place, must soon be expended — Powder of an excellent quality manufactured in the vicinity of this place can in purchased at fifty cents per [undecipherable] I am Sir your very obt hble Ser J C Honorable Sam^l Dexter Secretary of War
