Sir The Secretary of War has referred to me your Letter to him of the 16 Inst. on the subject of an overshare which you state to have discovered on the account of McIl- as Superintendent of the Vessel has been, to the amount of the United States Doll 182— I have therefore to request that you will forward to this office without delay the following company in support of your statement; in order that I may take such measures to obtain receipt as the exigence of the case may re- quire. It being the duty of every Public Office to take & expose impositions practiced against the United States, your communication on the present occasion, & on any other which may hereafter come under your notice must be considered very commendable — Sam H^o W.S. Agent for the Fortifications erecting at New York Rhode Island, has advanced certain on the books of this office for three hundred & [undecipherable] three Dollars, being the amount of sundry articles of Commissary from at New Yorks by [undecipherable] he has advanced to be paid for the purpose of being conveyed to S[tore] the sum of the fortifications of Said — I will therefore be held accountable for the said articles on the books of the Superintendent of Military Stores, of which I am apprising you for your information & government.
