Captn John Henry
New Port
R.I. Sir
The Secretary of War has handed me your letter of 29 June 1800, with its enclosure. At the time I furnished the Pay Master General with the account directing the Stoppage to be made for the supposed over allowance of wood drawn for the Cadet, the General order under date of the 27 January 1800, extending the allowance of wood to cadets was not then known at this Office. I therefore considered it my duty to take the step I did by directing you to be charged with the amount by the Pay master General, which amount being six dollars & 27/100 I find has been stopped from your Pay Roll for March & April, (and as I find that the General order fully authorizes the quantity drawn for, I now remit you the like sum through the hands of John S Dexter Esqt Supervisor who will pay it to you on passing your receipt for the same — I am sorry you should have supposed that I have used too much [underline: brevity] in noting the charge to the Pay master General, which must be confessed without the General order to have been proper —
