John Williams Jun^r Quarter Master Gen^t Pittsburg Accountants Office July 11^th 1800 Sir The Secretary of War having lately applied to me for information relative to the situation of your accounts as Quarter Master General in order that he might determine the propriety of making you further advances in that capacity: I have in conformity to my duty and his request transmitted to him a statement thereof taking forth the amount standing to your debit on the books of this office, consisting of the balance due by you in the settlement of your accounts at the Treasury, transferred to the books of this office, and advances made to you from this Department up to the 1^st July inst. the date of my communication to him; the aggregate whereof amounts to the sum of Six hundred & eight thousand, four hundred seventy five dollars & 4 m^ts. I have also stated to the Secretary of War that there have been transmitted to this office by yourself or Agents, certain accounts for which you claim a credit as follows Viz^t— Samuel Hodgdon's accounts as Agent for the Quarter Master General while he acted in that capacity — D^rs234008. 44 James Millars accounts as Agent from the commencement of his Agency to the 31 March 1800 — 40146. 33 John Williams Jun^r Quarter M^r General his accounts as rendered by himself, the last transactions whereof was by his letter of the 21 Nov^r 1799 — 40364. 19 Sundry suspensed Vouchers on Settlement with the Treasury — on the 10 January 1799 — $ 7411. 7 on the 2^d February — 4601. 80 — 7341. 27 Total amount of accounts audited by yourself or your Agents taken from the statements themselves D^rs 322517. 4 [undecipherable] showing the apparent balance; without any deduction for error, overpayments or improper charges, in the hands of the Q^r M^r Gen^l for which he has to account now? — 224529. The result of the consideration of the Secretary has not yet been transmitted to me. It is nevertheless my duty again to urge your forwarding to this office without delay, the accounts of the disposal of the Public money on your hands, in order that an early examination & investigation may be effected and unless this is satisfactorily & speedily done, it will become my duty to lay before the Comptroller of the Treasury the communications proper on the subject & in conformity to his instructions to me of the 30 January 1799. I have only to add that a Warrant has been issued by the Secretary of War on the 12 Instant in favor of James Millar, your Attorney on account of the Quarter master Department for Fifteen Thousand dollars, for which sum you are accountable.
