July 4^th 1800 Sir I have received your letter dated the 22^d May 1800, enclosing your account for expenses in pursuing deserters & vouchers therein referred to for Settlement— By the established Regulations of this Department as has been confirmed by a General order under date of the 10 May 1800 it has been made the duty of the Pay master of the different Regiments on the first instance to receive all claims which the Officers of their Respective Regiments may have against the United States, for settlement with the Pay master that in order therefore that your account may pursue the course pointed out by the Instructions to the Pay masters, I herewith return it to you.
