M^r Grand Prisoner Fort Tobacco Maryland Accountants Office July 8^th 1800 Sir Your letter of the 9^th June to Major Gen^l Hamilton enclosing an account for rations obtained & while on the Recruiting Service has been transferred to me by the Secretary of War to which I have to reply that it appears by a contract entered into with M^r James Baker of Baltimore that he was to Supply all rations within the limits of the State of Maryland to whom you should have made applications and obtained your supplies through him — M^r Baker has not yet settled his account with this Department, and as it appears that you have credited him with monies received in that account, I know of no way for grant to obtain payment for the rations & Supplies furnished by you but upon application to him & by furnishing him with the original Returns & vouchers that you made the issues upon, to enable him to render them in his account against the United States — Sam H W L Arch^d F Frederick Esq^r Portland M^e July 8^th 1800 Sir The Treasurer of the United States will remit you the Sum of sixty two dollars & 2/00 which you may please to pay to S^t Partl [undecipherable] at Fort Samuel, taking his duplicate rec^t for the same, being balance due him on [undecipherable] fifes account for Recruiting & Contingent expences — Sam H W L
