[strikethrough: ——] Sir Permit me to address you in fa- vour of M^r William Burton, a Gentleman who has been for several years past, employed in the Office of the Secretary of War, in the capacity of one of the Clerks. When I came in to the Department of War— I found him in employ, and have continu- d him ever since. He was well spoken of by my Predecessors, and since I have been able to apply [undecipherable] sections— I have [undecipherable: uniformly] found him diligent, attentive, and competent to the business he has been entrusted with. The situation of M^r Burtons family will not admit of his following the Office to the City of Washington. He is advancing in life and would be more happy, by a place as Clerk in [strikethrough: the Bank] United Sta[tes], or in one of [strikethrough: the] [undecipherable]. Your official situation and [undecipherable: ultimate] has given you a considerable connection with [strikethrough: do it from my the Circuit of the United States], and [strikethrough: I should not per- fore an] I should not perhaps fore[go] an influence sufficient, to aid the views of M^r Burton with [strikethrough: that] institution. I earnestly [undecipherable] you [undecipherable] this influence in favour of a worthy person, who is anxious by honest exertions, to be useful to his fa- -mily, and to society in general. I think Sir his character which I have reason to believe is perfectly upright— his steadiness— and di- ligence [undecipherable: particularly] fit him for the employ he has selected— and I can [undecipherable: add] that he has been engaged for [undecipherable: several] years past in the business of the War Office most con- nected with accounts which he has executed with perfect correctness.
