Document 1800Ellery expresses his regret and mortification due to his situation as a person who appears to be making exertions and pushing interests to obtain favors rather than validating and securing a claim. He worries that his solicitude might give him a reputation as being troublesome when it is his highest wish to stand well.
Copy Capt. Ellery Solicits Gen.l Hamilton’s attention to his claim - Adjutant General Office May 14- 1800 Sir I do myself the honor of enclosing you my accounts and vouchers for monies disbursed by me, in this office, and also the Accountant of this letter, finally rejecting and returning them at the same time I feel a sensible regret and mortification, in again intruding upon your time, and tasking your patience - a regret and mortification encreased by my unavoidable feeling myself in some measure in the situation of a person rather making exertions and pushing interest to obtain favours, than to validate and secure a claim - and also what indeed I should more sensibly feel, than the most unfavourable issue of this business from an apprehension that my solicitude might acquire me the reputation of being troublesome, and injure me where it would be my highest wish, pride, and ambition, to stand well. I have the honour &c Abraham R. Ellery Major General Hamilton.
