April 22. 1800. Sir, The present ill health of the Surveyor of public cloaths has made it necessary to appoint an Officer for that Department provisionally. M^r Jonathan Williams has been selected and you will please to respect him accordingly. You will deliver to his order from the imported Goods, a sufficient quantity for two thousand six hundred and twenty two Coats, eighteen hundred and ninety three Vests, four thousand one hundred and thirty one Woolen Overalls, and five thousand two hundred and seven Linen Overalls, which he will return cut into Suits. — You will take Receipts from time to time for the articles delivered to M^r Williams, and give credit for the Suits, (expressing the quantity in their component parts,) which may from time to time be returned, and receipt to M^r Williams for the same. You will also in conformity with this instruction make such entries in your Books as to shew with exactness the quantity and kinds of the materials delivered, and the kinds and quantity of clothing received in return. And whenever M^r Williams shall require it, you will direct a Clerk to attend the making up the Rolls of Cloathing in order to ascertain that each Roll contains the whole of the component parts of a Garment, or Suit as the case may be, and to mark it accordingly.
