Agreeably to your directions on the 22 instt Mr Murtrie was immediately called upon for his further information on account of the Fortifications at Mud Island.
I have now to inform you that he has accordingly renderd his accounts & vouchers for expenditures up to the present day, which have been examined the sum of D[olls] 68[?] [undecipherable] places to his credit, leaving a balance still due by him & the U.S. of Two thousand eight hundred twenty four Dollars & [undecipherable], and that I shall therefore want your further direction before the Warrant [undecipherable] on the 22 inst for 1000 Dollars in his favor as an advance, ruins this office —
