Springfield April 22.^d 1800. Sir, I have duly received your letters of the 16. & 17. instant, the latter enclosing One thousand Dollars in Post Notes on account of the Armory. Your favour of the 12.^th stating proposals for the delivery of Sea Coals at Hartford, for the use of the U.S. Armory at this Post, was received in due time, [undecipherable] the 18.^th — I wish you would have the goodness to close the contract — One third of a Dollar per Bushel for Coals, are better terms than I can engage them to be procured for, with us — The Swords, Scabbards & Belts, fabricated by M.^r Starr, are now in his possession in Middletown. The Returns & vouchers for the Quarter ending March 31. ultimo. for this Department, I hope have got safe to hand — if on examination, any thing should require explanation, or not stated conformable to your wishes, I wish for your candor, and seasonable notice of the same.
