On the 17th instant you were informed by letter that the Accounts received by you against the fortifications at New Orleans for expenditures made up to the 7th instant had been adjusted that a balance of Three thousands four hundred seventy one dollars ninety one Cents remained on your hands due the United States —
The Secretary of War has this day drawn [strikethrough: in War] in your favor for One thousand Dollars as an advance on account of the said fortifications; but being informed of the settlement of your Accts up to the 7th instant, & of the balance then remaining in your hands, he has desired that you be immediately called upon for your further expenditures. You are therefore requested to render your accounts accordingly —
