Francis Mentaly's agent of Fortifications] Accountants Office April 22, 1800 Sir, On the 17^th instant you were informed by letter that the Accounts received by you against the fortifications at New Orleans for expenditures made up to the 7^th instant had been adjusted that a balance of Three thousands four hundred seventy one dollars ninety one Cents remained on your hands due the United States — The Secretary of War has this day drawn [strikethrough: in War] in your favor for One thousand Dollars as an advance on account of the said fortifications; but being informed of the settlement of your Accts up to the 7^th instant, & of the balance then remaining in your hands, he has desired that you be immediately called upon for your further expenditures.
