Inst^t. I am informed that none of the Officers of his command had Waiters but that they drew Rations for such by way of perquisite, supposing it would be allowed. An officer may draw the Ration of a Soldier duly inlisted & mustered while he is employed as a Waiter provided the same is not otherwise drawn by the Soldier himself; but cannot possibly be allowed as a perquisite. The Pay Master General has therefore been directed to hold you accountable for the sum of thirteen dollars & 50/100; being the amount of 9[undecipherable: probable reading 90] rations drawn by you for a Waiter, under the aforesaid error, from 1 Oct to 31 Dec^r. 1799 at the contract price of 15 cents p^r. ration — Sam[undecipherable] W.L.
