I enclose you a Certificate respecting my title to Lands as a Canadian Refugee — claiming under the resolutions of Congress of the 13 April 1783 and 13^th April 1785 — — I only add that my lucrative prospects were promising — the Retreat from Canada put an end to them. — and that those whom I expected would help me at a future period. were nearly ruined from the same Cause. W^m Torrey] Joseph Bindon of the City of New York. deposeth and says that Will^m Torrey is well known to him. that in the year one thousand seven hundred and seventy five. the said Will^m. Torrey lived with this deponent in the City of Montreal in the Province of Canada as an Apprentice this deponent being at that period an extensive importer and vender of English dry goods. that the said Will^m. Torrey in consequence of the invasion of Canada by the American Army under General Montgomery, and their subsequent retreat was prevented by his attachment to the American cause. and the consequent derangement of this deponents business from attaining to a [undecipherable] of the Merchantile business. that the said William Torrey in May One thousand seven hundred and seventy six Took refuge in these reunited States. and. soon after entering into the American Army. joining a Regiment commanded by Col Moses Hazen. and continued in the said service a Commissioned Officer to the close of the War. that the said William Torrey resided for sometime afterwards in Boston. and for these seven years last past has lived in the city of New York — & further saith not.
