Joseph Bindon of the city of New York, deposeth and says that William Torrey is well known to him, that in the year one thousand seven hundred and seventy five, the said William Torrey lived with this deponent in the city of Montreal in the Province of Canada as an apprentice this deponent being at that period an extensive importer and dealer of English dry goods. that the said William Torrey in consequence of the invasion of Canada by the American Army under General Montgomery, and their subsequent retreat was prevented by his attachment to the American cause. and the consequent derangement of this deponents business from attaining to a [undecipherable] of the Mercantile business. that the said William Torrey in May one thousand seven hundred and seventy six took refuge in these United States. and soon after entering into the American Army joining a Regiment commanded by Col Moses Hazen. and continued in the said service as a Commissioned Officer to the close of the War. that the said William Torrey resided for sometime afterwards in Boston. and for these [several] years last past has lived in the city of New York —
