General Orders Adjutant Generals Office New York March 11^th 1800 Agreeably to instructions from the War Department the Recruiting service as far as respects the twelve Regiments of Infantry & the 6 Troops of Light Dragoons directed to be raised by the Act of Congress passed the 16^th July 1798 is for the present suspended. All Officers on the Recruiting service, belonging to the before mentioned Corps, will immediately join their Regiments with the Non Commissioned Officers [strikethrough: undecipherable] Musicians & Privates under their Command. Returns, as soon as possible are to be made by the Commanding Officers of Regiments, to the Adjutant Generals Office of the number of men enlisted under the General Order of 27^th January last. A Return of Clothing on hand in the 12 Regiments of Infantry will be forwarded without loss of time, to the Deputy Pay Master General at New York. Regulations respecting Barracks or Quarters, & Fuel to General Officers and Staff. Barracks or Quarters. To a Major General for himself four Rooms & a Kitchen — To each of his Aids one Room. To a Brigade General for himself three Rooms & a Kitchen To his Aid one Room. To the Inspector General in addition to his allowance as Major Gen[era]l two Rooms for Officers & one for his Secretary. To the Quarter Master General, in addition to his allowance as Major General two Rooms for Officers one for each Assistant or Clerk To the Adjutant General & each Deputy Adjutant Gen[era]l with a separate Army, the additional allowance of two Rooms for Officers To each Field Officer two Rooms. To each Captain one Room. To each of the Regimental Staff one Room To a Field Officer or a Captain, when Commanding a separate Post in addition a Kitchen — To two Subalterns one Room. To every mess of eight Officers one Room & a Kitchen. To every Inspector or Quarter Master of a Division or Brigade one [additional] Room for an Officer. Fuel to General Officers & Staff. From the 1^st day of October, to the first of April in each Year To a Major General two Cords & an half per Month. To a Brigade Gen[era]l two Cords. To the Inspector General, the additional allowance of one Cord per Month. To the Adjutant General, and each principle Deputy with a separate Army, the additional allowance of one Cord per Month To the Quarter Master General, the additional allowance of one Cord per Month — To each Inspector or Quarter Master of a Division or Brigade, the [strikethrough: allowance] additional allowance of half a Cord per Month — From the first of April to the first October in every year, the preceding Officers to be allowed one half only of the [quantity] of the Fuel appropriated to their respective Ranks in the Army of & one for Officers. To the Commander in Chief or Gen[era]l Commanding a [separate] Department or District, the allowance of Barracks & Quarters may be exceeded according to circumstances, of which he must judge upon his [strikethrough: undecipherable] responsibility for any abuse of the discretion. The Commanding General under special circumstances may also give orders in writing [strikethrough: to] enlarge or diminish the foregoing allowance of Fuel, and may by like orders, direct allowance in case of not provided for by any special regulation — No compensation in money to be made in lieu of allowance of fuel; nor any compensation to be received or paid to Officers in lieu of Quarters or Barracks. — This last restriction is not intended to preclude the claim of Officers for reimbursement, who has heretofore been obliged to hire Quarters where none were provided at any Post or Garrison where he was stationed.
