In answer to your letter of yesterday's date I have to inform you that the disbursements made by William Brophy as agent for the Department of War at Charleston amount to Drs $3617.91 on which he charges a commission of 2 pct amounting to Drs 72.35. The nature of this sum disbursements are as follows —
1. Drs $1694.11 is for monies received by him in large sums, to be paid to Thomas Bennett Contractor for erecting fortifications on Sullivans folly, & to D. [undecipherable] Contractor for furnishing rations to the Troops. - Had these monies gone through the hands of the supervisor, he would have charged a commission of ¼ pct -
2 $[undecipherable] is the amount of Warrant No 8283 issued by the Secretary of War in favor of Daniel Stone Supervisor to be laid by him [undecipherable] Agent & by him to be paid to Thos Bennett on account of his contract abovementioned. - On this sum the Supervisor has received a commission of ¼ [undecipherable].
