[ABK N° 2 among D & A &c. John Starr, deposition for John McGowen —] I John Starr of Groton in the County of New Lond-on and Stat of Connecticut — Deposeth and Saith that he was acquaint with John McGown — in the Town of Amherst in the County of Cumberland and province of Nova Scotia. that he the said McGown — Did reside in that place for a Number of years before the Fourth of July one Thousand Seven hundred and Seventy Six. that the said John in the fall of said year did join a number of Americans under the Command of Col^o Jonathan Eddy and with [strikethrough: the] them attempt to take possession of the British Garrison Called Fort Cumberland [undecipherable] for and in behalf of the United States of America — and that they being Defeated by a Superior Number of British Forces — and in consequence of said Defeat and his Attachment to the Cause of America was forced to abandon his whole property and flee to the United States for protection whereby he the said John did suffer Great Loss and that in the year 1777 I the Deponent [saw] said McGown at St. John River in Nova Scotia under Command of [undecipherable] Jonathan [undecipherable] Superintendent [of] the Service of the United States and Not long after in the same year I saw said John at Machias where he with a Number of Refugees from Nova Scotia did Render very Special Services to that place in Driving off the Enemy [strikethrough: [undecipherable]] that Did aim to Destroy that post. And I farther Certify that the said John McGown was a single person at the time of his leaving Nova Scotia and that he Continued in the United States till Some time after the Conclusion of the War.
