Col M^cHeath City Point near Richmond (Virginia) ~ Accountants Office February 27 1800. Sir Col: Levin Powell, of Congress has presented to me the within papers relative to the claim of Col: Lane for retained rations due him on the Western Expedition. On reference to the accounts of the Virginia Militia on that expedition I discover that an accot for rations of Col: Lane, was forwarded by you to this Office by letter under dates of the 2 Dec: 1799, with sundry explanations thereto, and that the account with sundry other papers was returned to you previous to your leaving this city. As Col: Lane's case appears a peculiar one, and of which you seem fully informed, I return you the papers inclosed, that with those in your possession you may be enabled to adjust the claim, and pay the balance to Col: Lane, which you may find on investigation to be due him requiring his deposition as to the number of Rations drawn & the balance due. I have informed Col: Powell to this effect the will no doubt communicate the same to Col: Lane for the purpose of making application to you ~ I am H: W.S.
