Newbury Street Boston Feby 26. 1800 Sir — Since last I had the pleasure of seeing you, I have been engaged in the County of York District of Maine, in bringing forward a Farm, in which having made progress, it would now be agreeable to me to obtain Public employment — but it is so long since I was in the Line, that I am somewhat at a loss in what way best to make application I therefore have taken the Liberty to presume upon your friendship, in which I doubt not I may find myself safe. A place of activity would be pleasing if it might be obtained, such as in the line in which I observe with pleasure you are stationed — or any other that might be eligible — I shall esteem a Letter from you on the Subject a singular favour, in which you will be pleased to mention the mode of application &c.
