Knoxville February 19^th 1800. Sir I received Your letter of the 24^th January last post, And have endeavoured to ascertain the facts upon which L^t Davidson Claims are founded. That You might be able to Report equitably upon the Demands of him and the Detachment This day I waited upon M^r William Blount (who was at the Period said Davidson States he did Military Services, the Governor of the then Territory) (Vizt. from the 19^th November 1792 to 20^th January 1793.) he informs me, the Service was regularly performed and to his Knowledge. Which makes the Claim good thus far. But I have had information that Payment was made M^r Allison for these Services, Which if so, there is a Propriety in making it appear, and will I think from the files of the War Office be determined; because if Payment was made, to any Agent, his Receipt must be lodged for the Amount. M^r Davidson informed me that he lodged his Muster Rolls with M^r Allison at Philadelphia. Some of the Members from this State to Congress if I am not greatly Mistaken, told me, they Saw M^r Allisons Receipt for the Money, of these facts further enquiry Shall be made — The next Post, I will Send forward my Report; and that You may examine the files of Your Office, to know if their may be any propriety of the Monies Connected with what I first [undecipherable] brought on to this Country in this Case, I have sent you a Copy of M^r Howells the late Pay[s] Master[,] Abstracts of the Sums Paid into my hands (and his directions Concerning the same. You will discover that I have Received two Sums for George Lee Davidson and Command from the 10^th October to the 19^th November 1792, for both 471—29 Dollars and Cents — which was Paid to M^r Allison (and his Receipts now lodged at the War Office for that sum, as also Receipts for those Services Paid, as his Vouchers from the Persons that did the Duty I have just returned from So. W. Point to see the Clothing lately arrived, delivered in Safety, which is done, And I shall set off to Morrow to pay my last Tribute of Respect to the memory of the late General Washington, And next post Will report upon the Claim of L^t George Lee Davidson I am Respectfully Y^r.
