[Petition of Jonas Jones and them Officers of Cap^t Militia Dragoons requesting compensation for military services. Feb. 12. 1800 Ref: to Com[undecipherable] [undecipherable] Reported [undecipherable] and March 17 1800] To his Excellency the President And The Honourable the Senate of the United States in Congress assembled. The humble Petition of the subscribing Officers of the Troop of Militia Dragoons formerly under the command of Capt. Jonas Jones in behalf of themselves and [undecipherable]. Respectfully Sheweth That from the 23 of April 1793 untill the 10^th of May 1793 they were in the service of the United States by order of Edward Telfair Esquire the then Governor of Georgia; at which time they were discharged by express order of the Secretary at War to Governor [undecipherable] — That by similar order of the Secretary at War to Major [undecipherable] Agent of the War Department, your petitioners pay and Muster Rolls were by him accordingly compared and forwarded to the Board of War — That since that time our Captain after repeated Assurances from our then Governor and his successors in Office that our pay would soon be forwarded; Which Assurances was repeatedly accompanied with Extracts of letters from the Secretary at War to our Governors justifying said hope. That at length in the Year 1797 your petitioners still remaining uncompensated for their services, Sundry Officers characters and respectable Citizens of Greene County were induced to petition Congress in behalf of said Troop — Which petition was referred by Congress to the Secretary at War; ever since that reference your petitioners have from time to time been led to hope, by letters from the Honourable the Members of Congress from the State of Georgia, that Redress would [undecipherable] them [undecipherable] at any Stage of the Session of 1799 and in same manner at every Session aforesaid. Your petitioners further beg leave to observe that beside the loss of their time the Militia service in the boundary is [undecipherable] very expensive, each man furnished himself with a complete Horse, his Arms and all other [undecipherable] — And that when the Agent of the War Department in Georgia is consulted — when the Files and Records of the Board of War and those of the Secretary of this State are examined, it will be found — That the services of said Troop was first authorised by command of the then Governor of Georgia and afterwards recognised by the Secretary at War, a specimen of which Files and Records your petitioners beg Leave to subject with their petition — Independent of all which your petitioners having been furnished with Rations by [undecipherable] and [undecipherable], Quarter Master and Hospital stores by the Contractor of the United States for supplying the Troops in Georgia during the time of their services Left no room to doubt that they would receive pay from the Same Source. Your petitioners always full of confidence in the Wisdom of their Country beg that your Honourable body will [undecipherable] — [undecipherable] examination of the merit of their Claims, [undecipherable] [undecipherable] you in your [undecipherable] shall have [undecipherable] it to [undecipherable] they must still believe it to be their just dues and thus humbly solicit that it may be no longer withheld.
