In the course of [undecipherable] matter in [undecipherable] lists I was [undecipherable] of names of certain lists of [undecipherable] Troops of Congress on in [undecipherable] of pay while in that Troop, on examination of the pay rolls of the [undecipherable] by I have discovered that the balance as stated on the enlisted Receipt Rolls are due to the men in [undecipherable] states & that the same was placed off their hands in [undecipherable] [undecipherable] pay master. In this case [undecipherable] he then applied to [undecipherable] of those names which he paid off William Anderson & Peter [undecipherable] to 31 October 1796 in full, and Christopher [undecipherable] from 1 May to 31 October 1796, leaving [undecipherable] balance due [undecipherable] from 1 January to 31 [undecipherable] [undecipherable] amounting to [undecipherable] dollars at which sums agreeable to the Receipt Rolls you are hereby directed to pay to the [undecipherable] in their proper person or their attorney legally authorized to receive the same. For your information I send you a copy of the memorandum [undecipherable] by [undecipherable] Butler, by which you will observe where these men now are, after you shall have completed the payments you write [undecipherable] the Receipt Rolls as a voucher for your accounts.
