[Caleb Swanfger No 4. Newtown &c January 28. 1800] Sir Several applications have been made at this Office by Officers & others in behalf of sundry soldiers late of the 1^st Md. Regt. for pay due them from 1 May to 31 October 1796. That rolls of that regiment on file with your accts. were accordingly referred to and it was ascertained that the money was advanced from you by Col. [undecipherable] the pay master to the said regiment on the promise to the amount Stated. The applicants were accordingly informed to that effect, Stated that as Mr. [undecipherable] has not rendered his acct. for that period, it could not be ascertained whether he had not paid those men or their representatives. The claims have now again been forwarded directed to [undecipherable] Butler made out in behalf of the parties some comments [undecipherable], as Mr. [undecipherable] is now in this place. I have to request that you will inform yourself whether he has his accts. or if they are not rendered from him it may early expedite the true state of these claims and communicate the same to me, for which purpose I hand you within a list of the names and sums claimed by each that of payment has not been made the proper steps may be immediately taken for satisfying the claimants Your ob^t.
