S^t John Teyes Fort Absalom near Wilmington M^t Gⁿ January 20^d 1800 Sir On settlement of Lieut Jones account, I discover you and A Harris owe balance for your accounts without notifying on the Returns that they were duly enlisted men (now that being settled thence) it is therefore necessary for you as Commanding Officer to inform me whether they were so or not. I also observe you draw for an amount of Brandy which is disapproved of, and for your future government I give you the account of the kind after relative thereto. "The regulations for distributing Spirits are merely directory as to the quantity that may be allowed when absolutely necessary, & cannot be construed were not intended to give an inducement to Officers for any part they have past served, by being employed, or stationed on services or from any other cause whatever."
