Pittsburgh 27^th Decem 1799 D Sir I have received Your letter of the 26^th instant — I am now preparing my Accounts for the D.M. Gen up to the Close of the Year and Shall with my other Vouchers offer him those for Pay of the Armoniers at this Post but which I presume he will not Accept as he Several times has declared he has nothing to do with the Ordnance Department. I Shall therefore on his refusal take a Liberty of Transmitting these Accts to your Care together with a Copy of a letter from the Secretary of War on that Subject — this I Shall be able to effect by next Post — The loss the United States has Sustained by the death of our beloved Chief cannot be Calculated. I am Apprehensive That by it our Government has received a deep Wound and have however yet left an Adams.
