Agreeably to the request contained in your letter dated the 12 Instant, I proceeded to collect the disbursements under the different heads pointed out & now inclose the following Statements Viz—
1st Statement of monies applied for the defence of certain Ports in the United States in pursuance of the act to provide for the defence of certain Ports & Harbors in the United States, passed the 20 March 1794, distinguishing the monies expended in each Year, from and after the passing the act upon the Fortifications of each Harbor, to the 1 October 1799 amounting to . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2d Statement of monies expended in the purchase and procuring of Cannon & Cannon Shot, from and after the passing of the Act to provide for the defence of certain Ports and Harbors in the United States passed the 20 march 1794, to the 1 October 1799, distinguishing the amount expended in each year, amtg to Drs 39930.29
As relates to the request of the 3d Statement, I have to observe that no monies have been specifically advanced from this Office for Salt Petre & Gun Powder. But mr Francis the Purveyor received on the 27 July last a Warrant for Drs 25000, on account of "Purchasing Arms & Ammunition" what proportion of this sum has been applied to procuring of Powder or Salt Petre or whether any part has been so applied I cannot ascertain, as the accts of Mr Francis are not yet rendered for the expenditures of that sum —
