Knoxville December 18^th [17--] Sir Your letters of the 27 & 29^th Novem[ber] I received last post, In the first I would remark that the Claim of George Lee Davidson and his party are for Militia services performed from the 19^th [---] 1792, to the 20^th of January 1793, and that [---] Davidson told me he put the muster Rolls into the hands of M^r Allison when at Philadelphia The Report that the money was paid to M^r Alliso[n] has Originated from some of the Members of this State to Congress that it was applied for, and that upon examining the files of the War Office, Allisons Receipt for the money was shown, If I am not mistaken, M^r Jackson has given that information, When I first undertook the Public business of this place, M^r Howell put into my hands Amongst other Payments, two su[---] for the Services of George Lee Davidson & party from the 16^th October to the 19^th November 1792 Amounting to 471.29 Which I paid M^r Allison & his Receipts are now filed at the War Office as the Other Services is Subsequent to the a[---] rather believe No money has been Committed to the Charge of any Agent for Payment. But I [strikethrough: undecipherable] enclose, You a Copy of the Muster Rolls of George Lee Davidson Upon which he founds his Claim, that you may examine into it they were put into my hands by my desire. I received Your letters to forward, which shall be done, but M^r M^cGuire is now at Winchester and the letter for him will travel back again to that place this post. The letter of the 29^th Acknowledges receipt of sundry divers Matters. I am now Sir upon the examination of M^r Hellen's payments and I have gone through two thirds of them which I find very Correctly, in ten days shall finish examining [strikethrough: them] all his Vouchers for the different payments to the Militia and shall soon have it in my power to Close all the accounts to the last of the Present Year, and I hope Satisfactory to the Accounting Officers. As soon as I can find the proper time I shall request the Secretary of War to let me return as my private concerns will make it Necessary for me to Visit Philadelphia by June, I now enclose you a Copy of my Memo for the month of November, and a letter which by some accident did fall among some papers directed to yourself. I believe it to be from the [undecipherable] by the last Express, the [undecipherable] of this misfortune is imputable to myself only. I hope however the consequences will not be considerable.
