War Department,
December 2. 1799.
Sir.
The enclosed accounts for Supplies furnished or paid for by A. Foster and Company by order of General Robertson to Wolfs Friend (an Indian and his party) then at Nashville on their way to the Seat of Government, were some time since presented and rejected, because General Robertson had no authority to give such orders, and it did not appear, that circumstances required the Supplies should be furnished.
They have lately been again presented, with a letter from General Wilkinson, of which the enclosed is a copy, dated the 15.th ulto stating that the motives which influenced General Robertson to furnish necessaries to Wolfs Friend of the Chickasaw Nation and his party, on their route to the Seat of Government, give a title to re-imbursement— That his attentions were doubtless salutary, and the effects correspondent: That the charges appear reasonable for the country and in his opinion should be allowed by Government.
You will be pleased to examine the Accounts with the Vouchers, and if the same are supported, report the balance for payment.
I am Sir,
Your obt. Servant,
James McHenry
The Accountant
of the War Department.
