[Letter from J. Schieffelin to Jonathan Schieffelin Sept. Nov. 4, 1799] [Colonel Samuel Hodgdon] Detroit 30.^th Nov. 1799- Sir, / Agreeably to your request, I do myself the honor of forwarding by the first safe Conveyance immediately upon my return from the Miamies, Duplicate Quarterly Returns of the Clothing & Indian Goods, for the Months of April, May and June 1797- with the Receipts, carefully extracted from Colonel Meigs's Receipt Book.— You will Sir, also, find enclosed, the Duplicate Receipts & Orders, Certified by Colonel Strong, for Issues in January, February & March 1798, to replace [strikethrough: those] which were sent enclosed in Colonel Strong's dispatches, via Pittsburgh — & did not reach you- The Returns of said Months you have already received. His Excellency Governor St. Clair did not attend at the Miamies, as was anticipated; which circumstance, has consequently, caused considerable discontentment in the Indian mind. Captain — Captain Sedgwick, who was appointed by the Governor, to deliver the Indians their Annuities, will no doubt send you the Receipts and Vouchers for the same; and will I presume, Report the circumstances attending the delivery. May I be permitted, to Urge your particular Instructions in order, that I may regulate my future Conduct thereby. I will not trespass upon your patience so long as to state my reasons, but they are of such a nature, that your personal knowledge of my relative situation, will readily anticipate. Has our friend Doctor Brown reached his place of destination safe and in good health? I am anxious to hear of him, and will be happy to hear that he is well.
