I do myself the honor of acknowledging the receipt of your letter dated the 23 Inst and of informing that the proper care will be taken in charging the persons therein mentioned with the amount of the loans you have hinted, as it shall have been ascertained —

I have received your letter dated the 30 N.— The claims for which you mention Mr Mason to have recd the money are similar I presume to some previous charg by a mr loans of this city, he informs me that you told him on presenting the papers to you that Mason had recd the amount, & in all probability misapplied the money. On examining the accounts I find some four or five items part of which have been paid by Mason and to others there remain'd small balances due. The major part of the claims however I cannot find any receipt for them. there are no vouchers or day rolls or accounts which show the money having been placed in citizens hands without the receipts were mingled at the advance of the United States — if you are in possession of any documents which will throw light upon the subject I beg you will communicate them from me by the first fair, as I no doubt will be applied to by Congress on this subject when it is brought forward, and shall then wish to be possessed of all the information in relation thereon —
