[221] Major Gen^l Alex Hamilton New York Sir I do myself the honor of acknowledging the receipt of your letter dated the 23 Inst^t, and of informing that the proper care will be taken in charging the precise [undecipherable] mentioned with the amount of the [undecipherable] you have [undecipherable] who is shall have been [undecipherable] Sam^l [undecipherable] [signature] David Henley Novem 29^th 1799 O.H.H. Knoxville Sir I have received your letter dated the 30 Oct^t. The claims for which you mention M^r Nixon to have [undecipherable] the money are similar, I presume, to some previous charge by a [undecipherable] of this city. He informs me that you told him on presenting the papers to you that [undecipherable] had received the amount, & in all probability misapplied the money. On reference to the accounts I find some four fifty names part of which have been paid by Nixon and to others there remained small balances due. The major part of the claims however I cannot find any [undecipherable] of here. There are no [undecipherable] or [undecipherable] rolls or accounts which [undecipherable] the money having been placed in citizens hands without the recruits were enrolled at the expense of the United States — if you are in [undecipherable] of any documents which will throw light upon the subject I beg you will communicate them [undecipherable] by the first [undecipherable] as I no doubt will be applied to by [undecipherable] on the subject when it is brought [undecipherable], and I would then wish to be [undecipherable] of all the information pertinent thereon.
