We the Subscribers do certify that John Mc Gown of this place Yeoman In the year of our lord one thousand seven hundred and Seventy six; did join with a number of others, and puting themselves under the command of Colonel Jonathan Eddy who at that time was Sheriff of this county they attempted to Storm and take the Kings Garrison at Fort Cumberland, Seized and Sent of the Provision Vessel, and many of the Soldiers Prisoners and sent them of into the United States, but being at length totally defeated by the Kings Troops- the said Mc Gown, with many others of the inhabitants of this county made their escape and got into the United States, as we were told and believe, and from that time till the conclusion of the War the said Mc Gown as we often heard was very active in the service of the United States. We further certify that the said Mc Gown had a Real and personal Estate of his property of considerable value at the time he Joined the United States, and that he was heir apparent to a much larger Estate at the decease of his father all which he has lost on Account of his [strikethrough: undecipherable] Rebellion and we do believe that the damage he has sustained by reason of the above premises may be reasonably computed at one thousand pounds. Given under our hands at Amherst in the County of Cumberland and Province of Nova Scotia this fifteenth day of November in the fortieth year of the Reign of King George the third Anno.
