[Cover endorsement: undecipherable] To the Honourable Thomas Rice Esq; first Justice of the Court of Common Pleas in the County of Lincoln in the District of Maine within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Memorial of John Uphell of Warren within said district, humbly sheweth, that he is of that description of persons for whose relief certain acts of Congress passed at their Session in the Year 1778, Entitled "An Act for the relief of the officers from the British Prisons or [undecipherable] and [undecipherable]" That he prior to the revolutionary War resided at a [undecipherable: place?] called Cobbigate in the Province of [undecipherable] in the Kingdom of Great Britain, and being desirous of aiding the Cause of United States of America, in the Fall of the Year 1776, with others, formed a party with design of [undecipherable] at Fort Cumberland, under the command of Col. Eddy, in order to aid the Cause of the United States of America; but the party being defeated in that Expedition — I was made a Prisoner and detained about nine months in Captivity at the Island of St Johns from whence I made my Escape, after many difficulties and hardships, arrived at St Georges in the District aforesaid, in a cold Season of the Year, hoping further to aid the American Cause. That in the Year 1779 I Served as a Soldier, at [undecipherable] under the Command of General Wadsworth. That I owned one hundred acres of Land in Cobbigate aforesaid which I lost by reason of my giving aid to the United States. John Uphell Lincoln S.
