David Henley Esq^r Accountants Office Novem 7. 1799 Sir I have received your letter Dated the 16 [undecipherable] with the extract from your Waste Books as therein mentioned — The fever having disappeared we are again safely returned to [undecipherable] I shall continue here, where you will direct your communications — I am &c [initials] Gen^l Sam^l Smith Novem 8. 1799 Baltimore Sir I have received your letter Dated the 5 Instant relative to the arrears of pay which may be due to Christopher Hartman a Soldier in Capt [undecipherable] Company of [undecipherable]. In answer to which I have to inform you that the Pay master of the troops in that quarter has not yet rendered his accounts for settlement so that it is impossible either to ascertain the State of the Soldier or the arrearage which may have been due him at his decease — I shall however forward immediately a Copy of your letter to the agent of the War Department in [undecipherable] directing him to inform me what balance was due Hartman — When I receive this information I will communicate to you the necessary steps to be taken to recovery — I am &c [initials]
