My dear Sir;
Dr Buchanan a Friend of mine is going to Philada to Solicite an Appointment as Surgeon in the Army & Navy — He is unacquainted in Philada & has no Friends there to forward his Application; as I have a very high Opinion of his Talents his worth & feel myself interested in his behalf I have taken the Liberty of giving him this Letter to you — If you can have any Interest [or] I [have] a very considerable one with the [undecipherable] or the Secretary of War I Shall thank you to exert it in favour of Dr Buchanan — he is the Son of an old Citizen of our Town, he studied at Glasgow & Edinburgh, & has had every opportunity of Education & has profited by them — he is added to these circumstances in his Favour very amiable & engaging —
Any attention that you or Mr Hodgdon will shew will be acknowledged as a favour to me — take my best Regards to her — he [undecipherable] for my late heavy Affliction — [undecipherable] indeed to me! — I intended to write to Mr Andrew Bayard by D.B. but have waited for almost every Ship [undecipherable] only send this my best love — adieu I am my dear [Sir] as [undecipherable] most Sincere[ly] and affectionately
