Sir,
I have just returned from Tellico where I delivered ou[t]
the Cherokee annuities for the Year 1799. which the nati[on were]
pleased with. The Goods were all delivered [in] good ord[er]
the Weather was favourable for the Purpose. The numb[er of]
Indians assembled was great, and the provisions [used]
amount to more than Five thousand Dollars, and [at]
this time it was unavoidable, but in future I am of opi[nion]
it may be less expensive, by adopting Some arrangemen[ts]
for a lesser number to assemble. —
I left Major Lewis acting in his
Duties with the number that had collected, and hope his pre[sence]
will check Stealing & plundering. —
