[Deposition Th^s Faulkner That W^m Maxwell act of his having taken up arms against the British government was obliged to abandon his family & [undecipherable] worth above 2000 D^s And is now a man in destitute Circumstances by reason of old age and the want of what he had left in the American cause Carter] I Thomas Faulkner of [undecipherable] in the County of Bristol & Commonwealth of Massachusetts, being of lawful age, testify and say that formerly being an inhabitant of Novasctia I became there acquainted with William Maxwell in the year of 1774 who was a man in good Circumstances and bore the name of an honest man, and from the repeated Conversations I had with him in the years of 1775 and 1776 I considered him a hearty friend to the American Cause of Liberty — and further testify that the said William Maxwell was compelled to abandon Novasctia in the year 1776 and leave his family and an interest worth more than two thousand dollars and Seek refuge in the United States by means of his taking up arms against the British government — and I take the said Maxwell in arms against the British both in Novasctia and in this Country and the Said William Maxwell is now a man in destitute Circumstances by reason of old age, and the want of what he lost in the American cause Thomas Faulkner Bristol, Norton October 24^th 1797 Then Thomas Faulkner the subscriber to the above written deposition personally appeared and being duly Cautioned was solemnly Sworn to the Truth of the Same — before me George Leonard First Justice of the Court of Common pleas for the County of Bristol in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts [seal]
